: ! Personal — Colonel Hume, Commissioner of Police, arrived from Wellington yesterday. Citt Council Election.— The election of a councillor to represent the South-east Ward on the City Council, in place of Mr E. Smith, who resigned his seat, took place yesterday at St John'B schoolroom. ; The candidates were Messrs A. Ayers, W. j Woods and W. I. Ballinger. Very little intereat was taken in the election, though 640 votes were recorded. The poll closed at 6 p.m., »na resulted as follows: — Woods 383, Ballinger 160, Ayers 100. Mr Woods has been declared duly elected. 1
