[PKB PbSBS ASBOOIATION.I WELLINGTON, Junk 11. Mr W. C. Buchanan, member for Wairarapa, addressed his constituents at Carter ton. Tbe speech was mainly an adverse criticism of the Government policy. Mr Buchanan received a vote of thanks. . At the annual meeting of the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Journalists, held this afternoon, the report, which was of ' a satisfactory character, showed that tbe roll now contained fifty-six names, and the balancesheet disclosed the fact that the finances were in a very healthy condition, there being a substantial credit balance. The election of chairman ot the branch for the ensuing year was deferred. Mr E. T. Gillon, who has been chairman since the formation of the Institute, was unable to again accept office on account of failing health. A resolution was passed expressing the regret of the. branch at his retirement, deep sympathy with him in the cause of his retirement, and conveying to him the best thanks of the branch for bis past services. Mr H. JR. Dix was reelected secretary, and Mr J. Ilott was elected treasurer. Messrs Seffern (TatanaJci Herald), Daigan (Wanganui Herald) and M'Dougall (Napier Telegraph) were elected country members of the commitee. The Government has acquired the Opouriao Estate for the purposes of settlement. Tbe property is situated about ten miles from the mouth of the Whakatane River, Bay of Plenty, and conaists of 6704 acres. It belongß to the Opouiiao Eatate Uompany, which ia prepared to band over possession to the Government on Jan. 81 next. In the meantime surveys for subdivision will be made. The estate includes some very rich flat land. It will be subdivided into farms of one hundred to one hundred and five acres, and will be disposed of on lease in perpetuity.
