COUNTRY NEWS.

Cbicket. — The presentation of the challenge cup and trophies won in the Association matches in the North Canterbury district during the paßt Beaaon, will be presented at the Temperance Hotel, Bangiora, on Tuesday next, at 8 p.m.

Traction Engines. — The Mackenzie County Council recently passed a resolution to stop the use of traction engines for transport purposes on the county roads. As one owner still continues at work, the Council has given instructions that he will be prosecuted under their by-law.

St John Ambulance Association.»The first ambulance lectures were delivered by Dr Leahy on Saturday afternoon and Monday evening to the members of tbe Ashburton branch of this society. Over a hundred persons have now joined and paid their subscriptions to the society.

Presentation.— At Fairlie on Monday Mr J. M'Gregor, for many years a member and chairman of the Mackenzie County Council, waa presented with a cheque for twenty guineauin recognition of his services in the interests, of the ratepayers. The present Chairman, Mr E. Richardson, made the presentation.

Swannanoa. —On Monday evening a large meeting of residents was held at Swannanoa schoolroom to wißh Mr Thomas Hide, an old and highly-respected resident, who is leaving for a trip to the Old Country, a good time and safe return. Tea wbb provided by Mesdames Atkinson, Burgin, Shepherd, White and Winter, and a pleasant hour was spent.

Dbtjidism.— The members of the Ethelbert Lodge, U.A.0.D., Springaton, met on Monday night to bid farewell to Bro A. M'Meekan, who ia leaving for the Wellington province. Bro Neale, P.A., on behalf of the ' Lodge, presented Bro M'Meekan with a silver teapot and set of carvers as a mark of esteem for the energetic manner in which he had carried out his official duties. Bro M'Meekan briefly returned thanks.

Kaiapoi Woollen Factobt.— Mr Smith, the contractor, is making very good progress with the additions to the Kaiapoi Woollen Factory, and it is very probable that he will complete the whole within his contract time. When the work is completed the company will have ample room for the full display of its goods. The new part will extend the full length of the building.

Band or Hope.— -The monthly meeting of the Amberley Band of Hope was held on Monday evening, when an excellent

programme, consisting of songs, reoitations and readings, wrb given. At the dose of the meeting tbe annual meeting was held. The report stated that there was a satisfactory balance' in hand,, and that, there were 135 members at the pießent time. The following . officers were elected : — President, Bey J. Dellowj vice-presidents, Mrs Boche and Mr M. Dalziel; secretary,

Mr G. B. Hoi ton; treasurer, Mibb Agnes Tiohnor; organist, Miss Tichnor; committee, Mrs Chamberlain, Misses Johnston, Shadrach and Fellingham, and Messrs Wornall and C. Chamberlain. ' ,

The ; Prohibition . Movkmknt. — At • a meeting, held at the West Eyreton schoolroom'on Friday evening, in connection with the Prohibition movement, the amendments to the licensing lawa proposed by the Temperance Alliance and the Prohibition League Conventions were unanimously approved, and it was decided to urge, the member for the district to give the Bill hiß support.— On Monday evening the Beva F. W. Isitt and P. B. Monro addressed .a large meeting at the Oddfellows' Hall, West Oxford. A motion 'approving of the Licensing Act Amendment Bill, to be introduced in the interests of Prohibition, was carried almost unanimously. Mr A. Wright occupied the cbair.

Hunting. — The South Canterbury hounds met at the German Cottages on May 30. About twenty followers turned up. The day was fine but the scent catchy, and although two fair runs were enjoyed, neither resulted in a kill. On June 3 the meet was at Mr A. L. Barker's, Win* cheater. A large number of sportsmen turned up, including some Timaru enthusiasts. After a couple of short runs, one of which resulted in a kill, a halt was made for luncheon, kindly provided by Mr Barker. On (starting again a hare was soon put up, which proved a weak one, and waa soon run into. Another was soon afoot and gave a fair but pottering run, remarkable only for the patient way in which the hounds worked out the scent. The hounds met on June 6at Graham's Boad. A field of about fifteen mußtered and enjoyed a good day's sport. The hounds started a hare in Mr Pearce's paddock, giving a fair run and ending in a kill in Mr Collier's paddock. Immediately a fresh start waa made another hare got up, and a fifteen minutes run resulted in another kill. Another good run, during which a lot of plough was crossed, ended in pass being loßt near Glengululee plantation.
