Mutual Improvement Associations.

There was a full attendance of members and friends on Tuesday evening. Mrs M'Cready, vice-preeident, Was in the chair; A good programme of muaio, recitations, 1 readings and essays was provided by the lady members, the essays "Volcanoes" and "The New Woman" causing a good deal of discussion.

The weekly meeting of the Tai Tapu Mutual Improvement Society was held on Tuesday. There was a very good attendance of members and visitors. The President (Mr B. A. Forbes) occupied the chair. One candidate was nominated for membership. The programme for the evening was a lecture on "Dr Johnson," by Mr W. H. Montgomery, M.H.R., whcee account of the life and character of the famous author was attentively listened to by an appreciative audience. Mr R. M'Garthy proposed, and Mr Carleton seconded, a vote of thanks to the lecturer, which was carried by acclamation.

; The Belfast Mutu al Improvement Society !held its usual weekly meeting <m Wednesday evening. There were about fifty , members and visitors present. The Bey W. Grigg (president of the society) occupied the chair. After arrangements bad been made for thn forthcoming debate on "The Undesirable Immigrants Bill," a very interesting lecture #as given by Mr E. Hi Ferguson on '.'Ghost Lore; or, Home Superatitioae." The lecture was interspersed with personal anecdotes, showing the evil produced by the old Yale-tide stories on the human mind. After; several of ithe o^der meniters tbia expressed their' opihions on thashbjecfc, a very pleasant and profitable meeting terminated in the usual way.
