MERIVALE v. CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
Thia match, was played at Lancaster Park, and resulted in a win for Merivale by fifteen points to seven. W. West made hi? reappearance bb' full-back for the College, and M'Guire appeared among the wearers of the Blue and White; Soon after the commencement it became evident that the Collegianß intended to play the game, and for a considerable time the ball hovered about the centre flag, neither side being able to claim an advantage. Merivale at last had a turn of attacking, and Gunthorps, White and Menzies had chances, but good collaring prevented a score. A College rash, in which Buchanan, Sale and Banks wore prominent, ended in the last-named player passing to Craddock, who made a clever and BUCceßßful pot at goal. Merivale came strongly after the reverse, and the forwards playing with greater dash and combination, gradually worked the ball into their opponents' territory. A number of free-kicks were awarded Merivale in the College twentyfive, and White was given some practice at goal-kicking, but no score resulted until Menzies, taking a pass from Lawrence, scored near the comer flag. No goal resulted. Another well-meant pass by Lawrence was intercepted near the College line, and a splendid passing rush, in which Buchanan, Craddock, Atkinson, Banks. Sale and J< nes took part, ended in the last-named scoiing behind the posts. Hallamore failed with the kick, and half-time was called with the score seven to three, in favour of tbe College. On resuming, the .Merivale forwards, headed by M'Guire, Soffe and Praser, attacked strongly, and Fraser and Soffe Bcored in quick succession after some tight play near tbe College Hoe. Nine to seven. A rush by the College took play to the Me*rivale liae, and the Maroons looked like scoring until White intercepted a pass and ran well down the touch-line, eventually kicking into touch at the halfway flag. Give-and-take play followed in the centre, Soffe, Johnstone and Menzies for Moiivale, and Bell, Ward and Atkinson for the College showing up prominently. Approaching the call, of time, the superior s'ayiDg powers of the Merivalo_ men asserted themselves, and from a scrummage near the College line White got over. No goal was kicked. Gerard was the next to score from a forward rush, and Lawrence failing with the kick, time was called immediately afterwards. Mr A. M. Labatt was referee.
