CRICKET.
(Bpzcull to Press Association.] SYDNEY, Jan. 23. As the last cricket match between the Englishmen and Queensland was somewhat i [ of a fiasco, the New South Wales Cricket i Association has agreed to comply with the request of the Queensland Association that ' the next match should be played by a j combined team of New South Wales and j Queensland cricketers. This has been I , done in order to infuse more life and [ interest into the game. fPEB Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Jan. 22. The team of Fijian cricketers iB composed of the following players :— The Hono J. C. Collins and J. S. Udal, Messrs H. M. ' Scott, A. B. Jaske.E. Caldwell, J. M'Owan, W. J. Groom, Eatu Cadava Levu, Eafcu Temsia, Ratu Tai Vanua Vau, Batu j Naivoloovo, Eatu Tui Saivau and Eatu i Epili. The first four Natives mentioned j are Bau chiefs, and the last two Eewa chiefs. The visitors are a fine stalwart lot of fellows, and should give j the local men a good%eal of trouble on j | Friday and Saturday next. This afternoon I they engaged in practice on the Domain ! ground in preparation for the forthcoming ! match. They show no inconsiderable I amount of ability both as bowlers and j fielders, their throwing being particularly i good, while as bats some of them are far j ahead of any of our local cricketers. The I best bats amongst the Native members , are Eatu . Cadava Levu— who is also a fast round-arm bowler — Eatu Epiii, and Eatu Nailovolovo. Tai Vanua Van is the Native fast bowler of the team. The Fijians, though noted for being excellent men in the field, are not quite so successful with the bat, the team relying principally on the European members in that department of the game. The Hon J. C. Collins, who is considered the best all-round man the visitors have brought with them, was. offered a place by W. (3. Grace in the English team that visited Australia in 1872. He was subsequently a member of the well-known Marylebone Cricket Club, and in 1889. when he left England, was a member of that club's committee.
