Timaru Harbour Board.

The monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board was held yesterday. All the members were present. A deputation from the Timaru Borough Conncil asked for a lease of the Board's foreshore on Caroline Bay to enable the Improvement Committee to place its contemplated improvements under the supervision of the Council. Some objections were iaised to the granting of a lease, and a committee was eet up to view the ground, confer with the Improvement Committee, and report to next meeting. The chief business done concerned the dredge 404. It was decided that the name of the vessel should be "Timaru." Mr F. W. Marchant, wbo was engineer to the Board when it was decided to obtain the vessel, and who furnished the original designs, asked to be appointed to superintend the trial workings and report; he would do this free of charge. After considerable disenseion, a proposal that the offer should be accepted was lost on the casting vote of the Chairman. Mr Barr, C.E., late engineer of the Otago Harbour Board, having offered his services as consulting engineer, it was decided that the Chairman should communicate with him respecting a single visit to inspect and report on the working of the dredge. An interim report from Mr Hendry on the machinery of the vesEel described it as substantial and satisfactory, but the deck machinery would take much cleaning. She burned 6fcwt of coal per hour under easy steam. The Standing Committee reported that the dredge had been insured for £8000, half her value, in a London office, and this was approved. Accounts amounting to £5983 were passed for payment, including £5000 for interest, £150 for ballast wharf, and £228 paid to crew of tug-dredge.
