♦ Lecture on Shorthand. — A free lecture on the history of shorthand, will be given in the Young Men's Christian Association Hall, by Mr J. M. Telford, thiß evening. Lantern elides, -procured from Pitman and Son, will be shown by limelight. Humorous songs will be sung at intervals by Mr R. M. Irwin. Cbicket.— The Hawke's Bay team is expected to arrive at Lyttelton by the b.b. Takapuna tc-morrow morning, and will go south by the express on Thursday. A Dunedin telegram states that Otago will be represented against Hawke's Bay on Saturday and Monday next by Baker, Clarke, Currie, Downes, Fisher, Harper (captain), Hope, Lawton, M'Kenzie, Parker and Stronach. Obangeism. — The monthly meeting of No. 7 Ladies' Orange Lodge was held on Thursday evening in the Orange Hall, Worcester Street. Sister Gourlay, the president, opened the Lodge, all the officers and a large number of members being present. Sißters Sloan and Mitchell gave fraternal greetings from No. 1 No Sarrender Lodge, which were duly reciprocated. Two candidates were proposed for membership, and one initiated into the first degree. The Payne Family. — Since this combination last vieited Christchurch, they have added two new lady artists to their company, viz., Miss Bella Handricks, solo violinist, a native of Victoria ; and Miss Elfii Morella, Boprano soloist, from the Guild Hall of Music, London. A sacred concert will be given on Oood Friday night, and a short season of secular concerts will follow. Day tickets may now be obtained at the music department of the D.I.C. The Alhambba Company. — The Alhambra Company, which concluded a season of six nights at the Theatre Royal on Saturday, gave a very successful concert at the Tuam Street Theatre last evening. There was a good attendance, and the various items on a well-selectad programme were much appreciated by the audience. All the songs and dances were encored, and a farce caused a good deal of amusement. The company will give another performance this evening, and will conclude ita season to-morrow. Fight dirt with
