Tho nomination of a member to represent the Southern Maori electoral district in Parliament took place at the schoolhouse, Kaiapoi, yesterday. The Beturning Officer, the Bey J. Wl Stack, presided at the meet» ing. Mr Tame Parata, the late member

for the district, and Mr Teofci Pita Mutu | were nominated. The Returning Officer called for a show of hands, which he dedeelared to be in favour of Mr Tame i Parata, whereupon Mr Mutu demanded a poll. The Eeturning Officer stated tbat the poll would take place on Wednesday, Dec. 20, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., at twenty-two polling booths, which he named. A vote of thanks to the Eeturning Officer terminated the proceedings. NORTHERN MAORI DISTRICT. AUCKLAND. Nov. 29. Hone Heke Poata, Uruarao Epairaimai and Te Kapa, Native candidates for the Northern Maori electorate, were nominated to-day. AUCKLAND COMMENT. fFBOM OtJB SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.! AUCKLAND, Nov. 29. The Star to-night saye : — The . elections throughout the Colony resulted in an overwhelming victory for the Government. The Opposition leadera have been utterly swept away, and the returns of all Independents and Doubtfuls credited to the Opposition give a total of 18 members of • thai; party returned, as against 52 Liberals, of whom 41 may be classed as supporters of the leadership of Mr Seddon and '11 who might, perhaps, prefer the leadership of Sir Robert Stout ; although the majority of these would unquestionably support the Government against any proposed coalition with the Opposition. Every Minister has succeeded in securing xe-election, while the disasters among the first rank of the Opposition are as astonishing as they are fatal to the hopes of that party. The most remarkable fact about the election ia the strength of the Government in the country districts generally throughout the island. Whereever the people have baen brought in contact with land monopoly, they appreciate the effotta of the present Ministry to secure for the people by fair measures their inheritance in the lands of the Colony. That was the question which above all others determined the result of the elections. Among contending cries of one sort and another, the electors never forgot that the Ministry had courageously grappled with monopoly, and had endeavoured honestly to find a solution for some of the most difficult problems affecting the welfare of the people. The advocates oE the direct veto by a bare majority are estimated as twenty-four in a House of seventy-four. It is probable, therefore, that no change will be . made in the present Alcoholic Liquors Sale Act until it has stood the test of three years' trial. The change from the management of the railways by Commissioners to a system under which the Ministry will have a voice in controlling that branch of the public service may now be regarded as a foregone conclusion. The position of the Ministry under the Premiership of Mr Seddon is wholly unassailable. The Government has obtained from the country such an endorsement of its past administration that nothing but wholesale treachery on a Bcale that is altogether inconceivable could deprive Ministers of the opportunity for further developing their policy, which it is plainly the will of the electors of the Colony should be afforded. [Per- Press Association.! ' WELLINGTON, Nov. 29. 'Mr T. K. Macdonald, in an address thanking the electors for the support extended to him yesterday, goes on to say : — " The Liberal Party in this city has .shown its utter weakness. Enemies without and traitors within its walls have torn it to pieces. The workers will not combine together to support three candidates and three only, and as a result they are impotent against the powerful combinations brought against them. It is hopeless to continue to strnggle in this city for their benefit until they learn wisdom in this respect. Recognieing these facts, it is not my intention to take any further part in the political life of the community." WAtMATE, Nov. 29. For the Waitaki seat the result of the polling complete is: — Steward, 1819; Patterson, 746 j informal, 28 j majority 1073. LATEST RETURNS. Buller.— M'Kenzie's present majority is 216. AUCKLAND, Kov. 29. For Eden the results are: — Mitchelson 1511, Niccol 1187, D&rgaville 814, accord^ ing to the returns published, but Mr Mitch elson states that his true majority is 350. Mr Richardson himself thinks that the petticoats at Gore were the cauoe. In the vicinity of the unemployed works the Government candidate got 57 votes to 15 for the other candidates. THE NEW MEMBERS.
