ASHLEY.
Our northern correspondent writes : — Mr Maximilian Whatman, the newlyappointed Returning Officer for the Ashley district, is to be complimented upon his arrangements, which ensured the early receipt at Amberley of the returns from the widely scattered centres in the elec-, torate. Very soon after nine o'clock all the returns were to hand and the results made known in front of the chief polling place by means of a transparency. Mr R. Meredith's return by so large a majority is looked' upon as a pronounced indication of the policy of the Government being acceptable to a large section of the farming community.
