j A meeting of the Committee of the j Amalgamated Shearers and General j Labourers' Union was held at the Tern- ! perance Hall, Gloucester street, on Monday evening, the Vice-Preaideat of the branch in the chair. Mrs Garmson, one of the delegates to the late conference held at Asbburton, handed in the report of the business done, which was 'read by the Secretary, after which a cordial vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Garmaon for her services at Ashburton in connection with the conference, and at the public meeting held subsequently. It was resolved—" That a letter of thanks be forwarded' to the Hon W. P. Beeves and the members who supported the clause granting the privilege of electoral rights to shearers." It waß resolved to convey the thanks of the branch to Mr Power, of Oamaru, for his kind offer in connection with the new labour paper. Mrs Garmson was appointed to the ExecuI tive Council for the ensuing term. i The Secretary's salary was fixed upon for the ensuing twelve months. Mrs Garmson was elected Treasurer. A general discussion upon the various candidates for the Christchnrch seats took place, and it was resolved that the branch approve of the candidature of the Hon W. P. Beeves and Messrs E. Sandford and W. W. Collins. It was resolved to hold meetings fortnightly until after the elections to watch over the position. The Secretary issued the new cards of membership, and an~active enrolment of new members is to be initiated at once. The reports of the last conference are very favourable, as the membership has practically donbled during the past year, showing that the work of Unionism is aa strong and vigorous as ever.
