Linwood Borough Council.

An ordinary meeting of the Linwood Borough Council was held last evening 2 present— the Mayor (Mr J. 0. Atkinson) and Councillors Pentecost, Kennedy, Board, Smith, Wilson, Horsley, Marshall and Brunt. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Dombrain for eight weeks. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read :— From Mr W. W. Tanner, member for Heathcote, Btating that instructions had been issued for the institution of a telephone bureau at Linwood. Eeceived. From the Department of Agriculture, asking the Council to observe Arbor Day (August 4) as a public holiday. It waß decided to comply with the request. From Mr E. Kirton, Chief Po-tmaßter,. Btating that the letter carriers now began their work between 8 a.m. and 8.30. It was impossible for letter carriers to leave the Post Office at an earlier hour. The Mayor stated that the Chief Poßt master had evidently misunderstood the Council's letter on the subject. What the Council , required was two letter carrier;, and a morning and afternoon delivery. In reply to a question the Mayor stated that at present only one letter carrier delivered letters in the borough. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Chief Postmaster stating tbat the letter waß not in accordance with the Council's request WORKS AND BANITARY. The report of the Works and Sanitary Committee was read. The Town Clerk had been directed to communicate with the St Albans and Sydenham Borough. Councils, asking them to co-operate with the Linwood Council with a view of obtaining a suitable nigbtsoil depository. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts since laßt meeting had amounted to .£136 Sb 3d. The cash in hand was £16 2s 2d, and the debit balance at the bank £232 la 2d. Accounts amounting to £132 la 41 were paesed for payment. DEPUTATION. A deputation waited on the Council in regard to the unemployed difficulty. Mr W. I. Ballinger stated that the deputation had been appointed to wait on the Council to see if it would do anything to relieve the congested state of the labour market by giving work to some of the married men among the unemployed. At a meeting last Friday evening it had been decided to ask tho Government to subsidise local bodies, but no official reply had yet been received. At present there were between two and three hundred names on tbe books at the Labour Bureau, He urged the Council to do something to relieve the distress, and concluded by stating that there were eight married men in Linwood in need of employment. The Mayor said the Council would carefully consider the matter. In reply to a question, the Clerk recommended that Albert street should be lowered and re-graded. The Stanmore road, between Tuam street and Cashel street, also needed re-grading. He suggested that Albert street should be regraded before Stanmore road. Councillor Pentecost questioned whether old men could do the work mentioned by the Clerk. Councillor Wikon moved—" That it be a recommendation to the Works Committee, with power to act, to find work for the eight unemployed men in the Borough during the congestion of the labour market at tbe rate of -3 a day, the sum not to exceed £50." The motion was seconded by Councillor Brunt and carried unanimously. THE TUAM STREET DRAIN. Councillor Board reported that since laßt meetiDg the ratepayers living near the Tuam Btreet drain had been approached aB to the amount of support they would be likely to give in the event of the drain being covered. The amount of support the Committee had received warranted it in further proceeding in its endeavours to have the work carried out. The Drain Committee recommended that the Council should supplement the amount promieed by the ratepayers (about £100) by granting the sum of £150. The Mayor said the report would have to be referred to the Finance Committee. After some discussion, the report was referred to the Finance Committee, and it was decided to hold a special meeting on Monday, August 7, to consider the Committee's report. MISCE-LANEO-B. It wbb decided to ask the Telegraph Department that telegrams for Linwood should be delivered free of cost, j The By-law Committee was instructed to frame a by-law prohibiting the re-erection • of old buildings on sites in the Borough. After disposing of some routine business, the meeting closed.
