Orchestral Society.
• LAST NIGHT'S CONCERT. I The Christchurch Amateur Orchestral ; J Society gave the second concert of its j second season in the Oddfellows' Hall laßt t \ night to a large and appreciative audience. i The programme was one of the highest i orderj including two masterpieces of j Beethoven, and Mozart's Grand Symphony jin G Minor. Mr F. M. Wallace and hia , ! band of instrumentalists gave admirable i interpretations of the work of tbe great | masters. Concerts such as that given last I night require much hard work on the part , 1 of the conductor and the members of the i orchestra both, and to all concerned the j highest praise can be unhesitatingly , ; given. ] \ Mrs Barns, who was the lady vocalist, j sang " The Lonely Rose," by Hermes, and "In the Wood " (Franz) very sweetly, the j only drawback being the indistinctness of 1 her enunciation. Later on the same lady j sang Gomes' "Salvator Bosa" so brilj liantly that she gained an enthusiastic ! ! encore. Mr Alexander Millar, whom everyI one is glad to hear again, chose for his first j solo Gounod's " She alone Charmeth my j Sadness." The song was so well sung that , | it was received with a storm of applause, in j answer to which Mr Millar sang "The i Diver." In the latter part of the concert ; Mr Millar scored a decided success in his j singing of Schubert's " Wanderer," which j waß also encored. j At the close of the performance the i members of the Society gathered in one of the ante-rooms, and presented Mr Louis Cohen, who is leaving Christchurch, with i a small token of their esteem and regard. • Mr Bonnington, who made the preseniaj tion, epoke in high terms of Mr Cohen's ■ ability and of his zeal in the cause of the ■ Society and of music generally in Christchurch. Mr Cohen's health was drunk with musical honours. A like compliment was paid to the Society's conductor, Mr Wallace.
