CITY COUNCIL.

■»■ A special meeting of the Christchurch City Council was convened by the Mayor for 6.40 last evening, to consider the advisability of postponing the usual meeting, so that the members might be able to attend the meeting at the Tuam street Hall ; present— The Mayor and Councillors Cooper, Wood, E. Smith, Swarm, Gray, Calder, J. T. Smith, Gapes, Flesher, Bonnington and Widdowson. The Mayor moved — " That the ordinary meeting of this Council be adjourned until 7.30 p.m. to-morrow, in order to allow those members desirous of doing so to attend the address given by the Hon W. P. Ueeves." Councillor E. Smith seconded the motion. After discussion the motion was lost by seven to five. Another special meeting of tbe Council was then held for the purpoaw of striking the usual rates for the year. This business having been disposed of, tbe ordinary meeting was held, the same Councillors being present, with the addition of Councillors AudersoD, Thompeon, Appleby and Payling. Items of finance were reported as follows ; — Receipts Binco last meeting, £572 '43 8d ; expenditure, £715 8a 9d; debit balance at bank, £4593 15s Id. Councillor Cooper presented a petition asking that the name of Taylor's lane might be altered to St Mary's Btreet. The matter was referred to the Works Committee with the view of arranging for a more suitable name. At this stage Councillor Gapes moved the adjournment of the Council, which was seconded by Councillor Bonnington. . After a long discussion the motion was carried, and the Council adjourned until 7.30 p.m. next Monday.
