A CLEVER ARREST.

A remarkably clever arrest was effected by Detective Campbell this morning Last night the police received a message at nine o clock saying that James Dawßon,. Chief Accountant of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Dunedin, had disap. peared, taking with him .£SOO of the Company's money. Dawuon was be* lieved to have drawn the money from the Bank on Saturday morning and left by the express the same day. This morning Detective Campbell went on board the ship Canterbury just about to leave for ! Boßton, and found a clean shaved man in 1 a bunk, whom he acoUßed of boing Dawaon.- --; Eventually the man admitted his identity and was taken a3hore. He had scoured a ; saloon passage for £30, and on him >waß found a draft on the Bank of California for 480 dollars, and *50 in gold. Dawaon, who is about fcwenty-eight years old, had I been in the Company's service thirteen years. But for an accident to the wheel, | the ship would have Bailed yesterday some hours before the police heard anything about it, and as it was, the detective was only just in time, the Canterbury leaving a few minutes after the arrest.
