Sweating.
TO THB EDITOR. Sib,—The thanks of the public are due to you for your " Labour Column," and also for sending one of your staff to make enquiries about the different workshops. Might I suggest that the same enquiries be made about smaller firms than those you have mentioned, and that you should extend your enquiries to the dressmaking and mantle-making departments. Writing from memory, I think I read that the tailorß in Strange and Company's averaged £2 7s per week, and we were asked whether that looked like sweating. For my part, I think skilled tradesmen should not average less than 10a per day. A few enquiries such as you have made will tend to keep up standard wages. Thanking you very much,—l am, &c, GRATEFUL.
