The Friendly Societies.

A meeting of representatives of the various Orders of Friendly Societies in and around Chris tchurch was held last night in the City Council library. There were present fire members of the Oddfellows, M.U., two of the Oddfellows, A.C., three of the Foresters, six of the Good Templars, one of the Rechabited, two of the Protestant Alliance, six of the Orange Order and three of the Druids. Mr J. M. Douglass was unanimously elected Chairman, and Mr Charleß O. M'Cutcheoa was elected Secretary foe, the evening. ' ; " The Chairman addressed the meeting, saying that the sympathy they showed to ' their fellow-colonists was the best federation they could have. The Mayor had communicated with the various Bicycle and Athletic Clubs, and had received encouraging replies. He also would communicate with the Fire Brigades and Shop Assistants to further ensure the success of the demonstration. Mr Foster read a letter from a gentleman in Brisbane, stating that hundreds of houses were washed away, and that damage to the extent of three millions was done. The Chairman reported that the Executive had appointed Thursday, March 9, for the demonstration, which would be held in Lancaster Park. It was unanimously agreed that shopkeepers and owners of factories should be asked to close their places cf business at twelve o'clock on that day. The meeting unanimously elected Mr J. M. Douglass as President, and Mr C. Foster as Secretary to carry out the demonstration. A resolution was unanimously passed that Messrs W. E. Mitchell, W. Harris and T. Stapleton should be asked to act as marshals. It was also agreed that the societies should marshal their own particular bodies. A discussion ensued as to the price of admission. A nominal sum was suggested to the executive. The Chairman asked Mr Tanner, M.H.K., if there was any likelihood of the Government assisting the movement by a subsidy of pound for pound. Mr Tanner raplied that the Government would probably make a grant and rely on the House passing the amount. It was decided that the chiefs of the various Societies should be asked to appear in the procession with banners and bannerets. : Mr Irwin, late 1 of Brisbane, gave a graphic account of the sufferings there, and returned thanks to the meeting for its sympathy. Club), Eyre, Cooper, Thompson (Pioneer Bicycle Club), F. Pannell, W. Arey and W. Thompson (Cash Amateur Bicycle Club) being present. A special general meeting of the Pioneer \ Bicycle Club was held at headquarters, on I Monday evening, to consider what steps should be taken for the benefit : of the Queensland Belief Fund. There was a large attendance of members, and it was decided to co-operate with the Amateur Athletio Club and the Cash Amateur Bioycle Club, so as to arrange a good afternoon's amuaement for Queensland Thursday.
