• -Woolston Band of Hops.— The usual monthly meeting of the Woolston Wesleyan Band of Hope' was held on Friday evening, when an exceptionally good progranune was rendered, consisting of songs, readings, recitations, &c. Tbe churoh was well filled, and the entertainment was a very enjoyable one. Obgan Ebcitaii. — To-night Mr G. F. Tendall, organist at the Christchurch Cathedral, will give an organ recital. In addition, the Cathedral Choir will sing Mendelssohn's motett, "Hear My Prayer," "Oh, For the Wings of a Dove," "I Waited for the Lord," and Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar." A speoial offertory will be taken up in aid of the Queensland Relief Fund, and will be handed over withont any deductions to the Committee. Thb Chbistchubch Bands. — At the open-air concert, to be given by tbe Christchurob. bands this evening, on the Botunda, the bands will play in -the [ following order :— No. 1, Btanmore—Overture, " Nil Desperandun: " (H. Eound) ; valee," Fatherland" (C. Kellar). No. 2, Garrison— Selection, " Les Cloches de Corneville " (B. Planquette) ; grand selection, " Patience (Sir Arthur Sullivan). No. 3, Sydenham— Selection. "Pastorella" (B. Smith) ; selection, "Dorothy" (Cellier). No. 4, Canterbury Engineers— -Selection, "La Sonnambula " (Bellini); waltz, " Promstionen " (Strauss). Knights op Laboitb. — The usual weekly session of the Eawhiti Assembly was held on Wednesday in the Druids'* Hall, Worcester street. General and local matters were dealt with. The delegates to the Parliamentary Committee reported in regard to the Knights of Labour political platform, which was duly submitted and approved. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the managers and editors of both morning papers- for aiding the Assembly in tbe endeavour to raise subscriptions for the relief of the distress in Queensland. Some other matters of mifaor -import were considered; balloting and initiation- also took place during the session. The pro. . ceedinga terminated in due form. ' Eipib Shooting.— The following men have been picked to fire for tbe Canterbury Engineer- Volunteers in a match against the Mounted Bifleß at Bromley on Saturday afternoon :— Lieutenant M'Gee,. Sergeant-Major Midgley, Quarter-master-sergeant Beveredge, Sergeants Fisher and Middleton, Corporals Bridgman and Pegg, Lance-Corporal Watts/ Sappers Watson and T. Smith ; emergencies— Sapper Swanston and Sergeant Evans. The following will -shoot for the Christchurch Eifles > against the College Eifles, on Saturday, at Bromley :— -Captain Andrews, Lieutenant Sandford, Colour-Sergeant Bishop, Sergeant Scott, Corporal Foster, Lance-Cor-poral Brunsden, . Privates Bentley, Steere, Murphy and Deej emergency— Private Quartly. Women's Institute— The Economics Department met yesterday afternoon, Mrs Sheppard in the chair. Miss Smith read a paper on "The Economic Independence of Women," and Mrs Wills a .paper on "Some of the reasons why women should be elected to School Committees and Education Boards." These papers will come up for consideration at the next meeting. Ib was resolved that a Public Franchise Meeting should be held on March 7, when all persons willing to help in canvassing for signatures will be invited to attend. It was agreed to prepare a circular for the chief School Committees as to married women teachers and also a public manifesto showing the need of the representation of women on public boards. The next meeting of this department will take place at the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association on March 21, at 3 p.m., and persons interested in the work are requested to take part. Eanoioba Wesleyan Church. — • The customary anniversary tea meeting in connection with the Eangiora Wesleyan Chnrch took . place last evening. The tea was provided by subscription, and tbe tables, which were laid in the schoolroom, were presided oyer by several ladieß of the congregation. There was a good attendance at both the tea and tbe after meeting. The latter was held in the church, the Ec« S. J. Garlick presiding. Mr W. H. Foßter, church Treasurer, read the balancesheet for the year, which showed income £126 8s lOd and expenditure £125 18s 7d. He stated that during the year two anterooms bad been added to the schoolroom, and had been furnished as parlour and kitchen. The cost of the roomß was .8100 and the only existing liability in connection with them was £25. Addresses were given during the evening by local and visiting ministers and by Mr C. Parkin. Several anthems were sung very nicely by the choir, under the conductorship of Mr F. J. Cumber worth, and the proceedings closed with the usual votes of thanks. This year, a canal across the Isthmus of Corinth will be opened for traffic. The work has been a labour of many yearß, and | no doubt mariners will be glad to Bee it completed.
