To-Day's "Cantebbuby Times."— Thb week's prize story is entitled "The Two Bowers/ and dealß with life on the New Zealafid goldfields. " The Growth of the British Empire/ shows the results of the colonising efforts of England daring the last four centuries. Mr S. S. Blackburne supplies a very interesting account of a tour on the West Coast. A sketch by Archibald Forbes gives the famous war correspondent's experience of royal fighting men. The Lake Forsyth regatta, which promised so much and produced so little, is fully treated by " Jason," the well-known authority on aquatic matters. A characteristic story entitled "The (Bush Undertaker," by Henry Lawson, the well-known Australian writer, whose sketches of backcountry life form such pleasant reading, is told in the author's beab style. There are many other entertaining articles in a really first-class paper. Sydbnhah Bowling Club. — A meeting of the members of this club will be held to-morrow evening at eight o'clock, at the Oddfellows' Hall, Colombo road, to consider important business. Supreme Coubt. — His Honor Mr Justioe Denniaton sat in Banco this morning, and heard argument in the case of Gromley v. M'lntyr'e, an appeal from the Resident Magistrate's Court, Fairlie. Mr Raymond for appellant ; Mr Kippenberger for respondent. His, Honor will sit in Chambers at; eleven to-morrow morning. Accident at Kaiapoi. — As Mr R. Stent, of the Kaiapoi Brewery, was cutting some wood with a tomahawk on Wednesday afternoon, he accidently cut hiß wrist so severely as' to necessitate the attendance of Dr Parsons, who had to. put one or two stitches' in. It is probable that the sufferer will be able to resume his business in a few days. The Typhoid Outbeeak. — The Board of Health resolved to order the shipHinemoa out into mid-stream for twenty-one days. It also telegraphed to the Colonial Secretary informing him of its determination, and asked him to support it in the action taken. The Bpard is now awaiting the telegram from the Colonial Secretary, and ! on receipt of this the chip will be towed into the stream. Queensland Belief Fund.— At eight o'clock this evening, an entertainment will be givenin the Theatre Royal in aid of the Queensland fund. An admirable concert programme has been secured, and Mr Crook's series of dissolving views will include a number of photographs of j Brisbane and Toowoomba.; In addition to i the vocalists mentioned in ■ a previous issue, Mrs Edgar has generonsly given her services. Picnic.— The employees in the sales department of Messrs Strange and Co. held their annual picnic to-day. All the arrangements were made in a most satisfactory manner. About one o'clock fourhorsed drags and waggonettes, from Messrs Clarkson and Sons' stables, took a large party, numbering nearly one hundred, to a paddock at Tai Tapu, which Mr Harry White had kindly lent for the occasion. The weather was all that could be desired, and the picnic promised to be a most enjoyable one,. > Dbuidism.— At the ordinary meeting of the Hope of 8t Albans Lodge, held on Tuesday evening, Arch Braid Bro Chas. Stewart presiding, the Bardo reported that there were no sick members. During the eVening the sum of four guineas -was voted to relieve the sufferers by the Queensland floods, to be sent in prod ace. The delegates of the gala and art union were instructed to obtain from the profits a substantial amount, to be devoted to the same laudably object. After Borne excellent harmony, the Lodge was closed in true Drnidic form by the A.D. Steen- Smith Combination.— This company will commence a season at the Theatre Royal on Monday evening. Professor Steen challenges all those who believe in spiritual phenomena to produce a single manifestation which he cannot duplicate by human agency. A great amount of correspondence has taken place in Dunedin as to the methods which Madame Steen and he adopt in carrying out their performance, but there is a unanimity of opinion that it is remarkably mysterious. The bos plan for the first performance will be opened to-day at Messrs Milner and Thompson's. Eangioba School Committee.— The monthly meeting of this Committee was held on Wednesday evening ; Mr H. Boyd in the chair. The master reported the number on the roll to be 429. Fifty-three scholars wero admitted during the month, aod twenty-one names written off, showing a net increase of 32 scholars. The average attendance during the past week was 377*2. The Committee decided by ballot to vote for Meesrs Meredith, Mannings and Peryman for election to the Board. The Chairman reported that a small addition and some other alterations to the master's house -were urgently required, and it was decided to apply to the Board for the work to be done. Several matters reported bj the Visiting Committee were left to the Chairman to attend to. Messrs Graham and Ball were appointed the Visiting Committee for the month, and the meeting terminated. West Chbistchubch School Com mittee. — A special meeting was held oi Wednesday evening; present — Mr J Munnings (Chairman), and Messrs R. Hil Fisher, G. Tombs, J. Venables, A. Bleach A. Alfrey and G. T. Chisnell. Miss E Beck, having been appointed to Addington resigned her position on the staff. Thi Committee parted with her with regret she having proved herself a thoroughl; efficient teacher, but they congratulate) her upon her advancement. It was agree) to ask the Board to appoint Mr p. Menzie to the vacancy. He had acted as tern porary substitute for some months las year, and had satisfied the Committee tha he was thoroughly capable and well fittei for the position. Mr Thomas appeared |for the bankrupt, and Mr Beswick appeared for Messzs Miles and Co. The Official Assignee adjourned the meeting sine die. Govebnob op Nbw South Wales. — The Eight Hon R. W. Doff, tV& newly appointed Governor of New South Wales, was born in 1835. In 1871 he married a daughter of the late S;r Walter Scott. He changed his name from Abercrombie to Duff on his succession, in 1861, to his uncle's estates. He was made a Junior Lord of the Treasury in 1862, and was a Civil Lord of the Admiralty in 1885 and 1886. He has represented Banffshire in the House of Commons since 1861. : St Paul's Psebbytebian Chttbch, Kaiapoi. — The congregational meeting of this church was held in the vestry on Wednesday evening, the Rev W. J. Gow presiding. There was a good attendance of members. The Treasurer presented the balance-sheet, which showed the grosß revenue for the year to be .£341, j and the expenditure £378. The balancesheet was adopted, on the motion of Mr Millar, who spoke very hopefully of the prospects of the church during the ensuing year, and pointed out that the deficit which appeared on the year's work waa I entirely owing to the , extraordinary ex- 1 pensea incurred, and that the ordinary • expenses had been more than met by the j ordinary revenue.
