WELLINGTON NEWS.
[Per Pbkbs Association.! WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. Mr Leon Perrett, who waß arrested by mistake as a Eussian spy in Queensland, has been visiting the mines in the south. He is accompanied by the inspector, and comes accredited as a mining expert from the Eußsian Government. He was much struck with the river dredging in Otago, which he considers could be profitably applied to rivers in Euasia* Mr Perrett is now on his way to Botorua and Te Aroha, where the local inspector will show him round the mines. The Minister for Lands is engaged upon a scheme for the disposal of unoccupied Crown landß in the Clarence district, South Island. The Champion Athletic Meeting shows a profit of Je97. Colonel Fox's report on the defences, &c, is not to be published in full, being partly confidential. The Government will 1 probably allow to be circulated pieces only, containing those portions to the making known of which the Commandant considers there ia no objection. The Governor was greatly pleased with the scenery and the warmth of his reception on the West Coast. Lord Hopetouu arrives on Saturday. There will probably be some sort of official reception. . The Colonial Secretary has received no communication from Lyttelton as to the Hinemoa. He considers that he has no power to interfere with the ship.
