The Weather. — The weather in the northern district was dull this morning, with an ocoairional light drizzling rain from the east. Supreme Court. — The criminal session of the Supreme Court dosed this afternoon. Michael Corcoran and John Howard were sentenced to three years' penal servitude for larceny from the person, and G. S. Hickman was acquitted on a charge of embezzlement. j Bangioba Mabket.— The ' auctioneers had a busy time at the Bangiora market to-day, there being an exceptionally large entry of sheep to dispose of. The harvesting still having a strong claim on the attention of the farmers, the attendance at the market was considerably below the average; nevertheless, there appeared to be plenty of life in the sales. Water Polo Championship of New Zealand.— This championship has been i allotted to the East Christchurch. Club thia year, and will be played off at the Gloucester street school bath next Saturday afternoon. The game is a very exciting one, and the contest for the banner promises to be very close. The winning team holds for one year a banner known as the New Zealand Water Polo Banner, and the members of the winning team also have medals presented to them. Chimney on FißE.^About twenty minutes to twelve o'clock to-day a chimney caught fire in a four-roomed house occupied by Mr E. Corley, who lives in Purdie street, jucit off St Asaph street west. One of Mr Corley's sons was patting some sticks on to the fire in the kitchen when the chimney ignited. The boy immediately ran outside and broke Box No. 14, near the White Horse Hotel. The firebells at the Chester and Lichfield street stations rang out an alarm, and the brigades promptly turned out, but their services were not required, as all danger was at an end before they arrived. The house was insured for JBISO, but there was no insurance on the furniture. Meeting of Creditors. — The first meeting of creditors in the estate of John Mathews, carpenter, of ' Cfaristchurch, called for two o'clock to-day, lapsed for want of a quorum. The following is the statement: — Unsecured creditors £76 Is Id, secured £541 12s, estimated value of securities £554 12s, leaving a surplus of £13. Other assets, nil.^The unsecured creditors are :— B: W. England £6 13s Id, H. Slater £13, J. Bantin £2 7s 3d, H.
