Sumner seems to be living largely on its ; ' reputation. Now, there is an old-time ' assurance that "the reputation of actions , passed, if not kept up by an access, and fresh supply of new ones, ib loßt and soon forgotten." A few years ago, Sumner was energetic in devising and carrying out improvements, to the end that visitors might be attracted, and that Sumner might be regarded as "the" sea-Bide reßort of Canterbury. People have flocked to the marine borough in goodly numbers, but the stream of traffic is being largely diverted to New Brighton, where those who have the direction of local affairs are of a more go-ahead sort. People go to New Brighton to bathe in the surf, and they have had conveniently-placed dress- ! ing-rooms provided for their accommoda- ; tion. People also go to Sucaner for the surf-bathing. The still water of the fardistant swimming-bath is not to their : liking, and, moreover, to .many the daily j cost for a family party is a consideration. \ ■ It might- have been imagined that the popular taste would be closely studied by the Council, and that the obvions requirement of a few well-built shelter-sheds on ! the beach would have been provided long ago. There is another matter to which the human power. It is quite possible he has persuaded' himself that he does in very . truth possess an influence such as this; and if disease-smitten people can bring . themselves to believe so too, and thereby ' derive benefit, who snail complain f
