.» Sheep Returns. — The sheep returnß show that the total numbor ot sheep in the Canterbury and Kaikoura districts is 5,2-15,867, an increaoe of 390,514 upon the total of last year. Chemical Lectures.— This evening the introductory lecture of a courne on «' Radiant Energy" will be given by Profesßor Bickerton, in the Chemical Lecture Theatre, at Canterbury College. Canterbury Liberal „ Association. — A meeting of the members of the Canterbury Liberal Association was held on Tuesday evening in the Oddfellows' Chambers, Mr W. Ensom, President, in the chair. The Committee reported that the membership had more than doubled since the last meeting, and that the finances were in a satisfactory condition. Arrangements had been made for holding public meetings in Lyttelton,Kaiapoi,Rangiora and Amberley. The Committee's action in reference to the Bills now before Parliament was approved. Owing to the request of the residents of Lyttelton that no public demonstration Bhould be held there this week, on account of the death of Mr H. Allwright, it has been decided to postpone the meeting which was to have been held in connection with the Association in Lyttelton tomorrow. It will, therefore, take place at the Colonists' Hall on Friday week, July 29. Merivale Winter Entertainment.— The second of the series of winter entertainments in connection with St Mary's Church was held in the Herivale schoolroom yesterday, when the room was comfortably filled. The first item on the programme was a pianoforte duet by the Misßes Vincent. Mrs Weßtland sang "My Nanny was Awa," and was encored, and in | response she sang " The Skye Boat Song." The Misses Helmore were heartily applauded for their rendering of a duet, and Miss Helmore sang "I'm a Merry Zingara." Mibb E. Helmore sang "Needles and Pins," which provoked hearty applause. Mr Arthur Merton sang " The Mighty Deep," and was greeted with an encore, and in response he sang "Father O'Flynn." Mr Hodgson gave " Over the Hillß and Far Away," and Mr Corbott "Margarita." Mrs Chynoweth gave a recitation entitled " The Kissing Cup," and Miss Vincent played a pianoforte selection. The second part consisted of the farce, Poor Pillicoddy, the characters being represented by Mrs Frank Brittan, Misses Brown and Hannah, and Messrs Guise Brittan and Frank Brittan. On the motion of the Rev C. J. Merton, a vote of thanks was passed to all those ladies and gentlemen who had contributed items. The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close a very successful entertainment.
