The Pittsburgh Strike.
Who are the Pinkerton police ? They are the police bo severely handled after such riotous fighting by the (strikers at Pittsburgh. They are not police ab all in the proper sense of tho term. A police force is a State force. It is the impartial guardian of law and order under the command of the public authorities, who are responsible for tho maintenance of tho public tranquility. The Pinkerton men are maintained by the masters in several States of the Union j they engage to come forward during strikes, and take the places of the strikers, or protect tho3e who do, as the case may be. No one can sympathise with such taking the Jaw into private hands, which produces civil war. It is pleasant to read, by way of contrast, in the speeches of the speakers at the Uniouiatic meeting at Wellington tho r.nanimous wislj of the l?aders to substitute arbitration for strikes. That is the right and proper extreme to which Society ought to be led quickly away from the other extreme, which the Americans have proved means civil war.
