WELLINGTON NEWS.
♦- [feom oue own correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Jttne 3. RUMOURS AND CANARDS. A propos of the political situation, no one regards seriously the threat of a vote of no-confidence, which has been worn threadbare in certain political quarters here. The Hutchison rumour, which was, by the way, absolutely unfounded, was part of that curious piece of tactics. So was the angling for Mr George Fißher, who ha 3 been industriously represented as certain to vote with the Opposition on this momentous occasion, bub the leaders of the Opposition, I have reason to know, never have been keen about an early attack on the Government. They know quite well that their party is disorganised, and one at least has declared that he is against any obstructive tactics. The rumours and canards are all manufactured in a certain newspaper office, with the assistance of some busy-bodies of the House, who consider themselves " hubs " of the political universe. "We have never known the Opposition Press," says the Post this evening, " and we speak from a somewhat long experience, so malignantly bitter and unscrupulous as it i3 at present. This opposition, so far as this place i 8 concerned, culminated in an attack on Mr M'Kenzie Apropos of the Spence racket; but the speech at Paluierston set that right. The truth is that the Opposition feels at last that it is in the presence of a Government of resources and courage, which cannot be lightly attacked, and cannot be attacked at all with impunity. The leadership notbeing settled, it is, on the face of it, idle to speak of organising votes of noconfidence." NATIVE BILLS. The Native Bills are kept back for the Commission's report ; the hitch is that Mr Commissioner M'Kay is preparing a separate report.
