CHRISTCHURCH DOMAIN BOARD.
'♦ The quarterly meeting of the Christchurch Domain Board was held in the City Council Chambers to-day. The following members were present :— The Hon C. C. Bowen (in the chair), Sir John Hall, Messrs E. J. S. Harman and MurrayAynsley, the Mayors of Sydenham and Sfc Albans, and Colonel Lean (Secretary). The report of the Head Gardener stated that the Board's direction, to inspect the avenues and the other trees contiguous chiefly on the south side of the Eiccarton road to suggest a basis of thinning, had been attended to, and a full reportfurnißhedto the Executive Committee. The Executive seemed animated with one object, that of only sacrificing uuoh of the trees that were injuring or soon likely to injure by growth or overcrowding the trees of the avenue. The work of thinning is now being carried ont. The Board'B order, affecting the naming of the New Zealand trees and shrubs, is now fairly in hand. Mr A. E. Cookayne, a gentlemen conversant with the New Zealand flora and an expert collector, has offered, at his own cost, to collect such plants as are desirable, should the Board be willing to accept them, and would agree to defray the cost of their carriage, which would be a very moderate outlay, probably £5 or £G. In regard to the deßire of the Board, that some suitable planting should be carried
out by the boundary fence on the garden side of the Museum, he would propose that a strong group of Abieß Douglaeoi be established, as it would be a feature of superior effect and novelty. The report was approved. It was resolved to accept Mr Cockayne's | generous offer of a collection of plants, and j that the thank 3 of the Board be tendered : him. 1 Mr Harman was elected a member of the j Executive in the place of Mr Baker. • The application of the Golf Club to place 1 a building on North Park to hold the Club's material was granted on the usual terms, 303 per auuum. It was explained that the building would be od wheels, and would be removed at very short notice. Mr Harenan drew attention to the very 1 large number of horsemen who each : Saturday frequented the football matches, ' and thereby infringing the by-laws. 1 It was resolved that the Ranger be 1 instructed to warn horsemen off and to take other means to Btop the practice. ■ ]
