CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. (Before R. Westenra, and R. Hill Fisher, Esqe.) Drunkenness. — - A first offender was fined Ss. Laeceny.— John Black (10), "William Talbot (13), Archibald Robert Burnside (13), three lads, were charged with larceny of crackers from the shop of Mr S. Mumford, Manchester street, yesterday afternoon. Black and Talbot pleaded "Not Guilty," but Burnside admitted having taken a packet, and stated that Black had taken one. Burnside stated that the door was wide open when he and Talbot returned from Sumner, and he entered it, and while he was there a girl came for a pennyworth of lollies. As no one came he took a packet of crackers and left. Two witnesses were called in support of the charge, and the defence was that the door was wide open, and they went in to buy lollies. It appeared that Black had been convicted of thieving in 1888, but had been behaving himself well recently. The Bench ordered them to receive six strokes of the birch. - r I
