. «. The Australian Mail. — The Mararoa, from Melbourne, arrived at the Bluff last evening. Her mail will therefore be due in Christchurch to-morrow night. Parliamentary.— Sir Harry Atkinson returned to Wellington by the steamer Penguin on Saturday night. The Hon E. C. J. Stevenß, Sir John Hall, the Hon W. Rolleaton, and Messrs Mereaith and Dawson, M.H.R.'s, were also passengers. School Committee Elections. — Attention is drawn to the fact that the election of School Committees for the districts of Sydenham, Waltham, New Brighton and Burwood takes place to-night, in each case at seven o'clock. It should also be noted that the system of cumulative voting at theße elections has been abolished. Springfield.— Our correspondent writes : — When the newspapers arrived containing the result of the scholarship examinations, very great pleasure vjas felt o_ eeeing the position occupied by our youthful townsman, Master Michael Eeane, who tops the list in Class A, with 369 marks. It speaks volumes for the aptitude of the lad, seeing he Is only just over eleven years, and also reflects great credit on Mr Seay, his teacher, who alone has beon instrumental in training him. The Avon Steamer. — An inspection of : the Avon steamer on Saturday showed her to be none the worse for her week's stay at the bottom of the river. Mr Walker had the engines taken to pieces, ' and found that no silt had got into them ; ; consequently there need be no delay ! in getting steam up. It has ,been . decided to raise the mouth of the supply i tank some inches, an alteration which will ! prevent a recurrence of the late unpleasant mishap. Mb F.
