To-day's play at the Chess Congress resalted as follows : — Hookham had the move againßt Ollivier, and played the Zukertort opening. At the 5.30 adjournment Hookham led by a Pawn. Barnes had the move against Brown, the Scotch Gambit being played by the first named -competitor. Barnes won a Pawn at move 18, and the exchange (Eook for Bishop) at the 27th move. With thiß dual advantage, Barnes rapidly forced the game, his opponent resigning at move 35. Mouat next opened against Edwards, the Danish Gambit being brought forth for the first time in the Congress. At move 19 the local man lost ground in a series of exchanges by firat taking with a Knight instead of Bishop. Mouat, thus having the advantage of Book againßt Knight, had no difficulty in registering a win. The game only occupied an hour and five minntes.
To-night Hookham defeated Ollivier, aB the latter could not Btop him from Queening a pawn. Littlejohn beat Siedeberg throngh winning a Bishop at move 36. These two games were watched by a large number of spectators. The reault gave "the championship to B. J. Barnes, of Wellington, with seven wins out of nine games. Brown and Bolton are engaged in a game, which commenced at 7.30. There •will be two matches to-morrow to decide -who is second.
