The Star. THURSDAY, MAY 8, 1890. St Albans School Committee.

The meeting of householders, held on Monday week for the election of a School Committee for the Borough of St Albans, was, according to report, of a Eomewhat extraordinary character. That the proceedings would be lively seems to have been expected, for we are told that nearly two hundred and sixty people were present. This large attendance is in marked contrast to the state of things which used to exist a few years ago when frequently a meeting of householders meant the aßßembling of Borne half-dozen gentlemen who found a difficulty in obtaining the consent o£ seven householders to be nominated for the Committee. It is well that so much more interest is now being taken in the management of one schools, and would be better it in no case the larger attendance could be attributed to a prospect of some fun. At St Albans there appears to have i been a want of cordial sympathy between the members of the old Committee, and this Geenia to have been the cause of much unpleasant feeling. If we are to be guided by the nature of one of the resolutions carried at the public meeting, we must believe that the very objectionable system, boycotting, had been brought to bear against " one section of the Committee in the minority." That any acrimonious feeling of this nature should exist in a School Committee iB much to be deplored. We will not aeli where tho blame lies, but content ourselves with expressing the hope that the last has now been heard of it. Towards this reformation a resolution carried by the meeting will greatly tend. This was— " That all meetings of the Committee in future be reported in. the daily Press." There is nothing like publicity to soften the asperities which some unfortunate people, whose livers are in an abnormal condition, must introduce into any discussion they take part in. The meeting did not separate on Monday till they had elected a Committee for the current year, but the boycotting apparently was still in full force, for the members refused to hold the usual election of a Chairman. Last night, however, this matter was put right. A Chairman has been elected, and let us hope that ho and all the members of his Committee will work together in the utmost unanimity.
