" Telemachus " and the Exhibition.

In another column will be found an extract from an article contributed to the Otago Daily Times by " Teleinachiiß," the Exhibition correspondent o£ the Melbourne Argus. " Telemaehus," it will be seen, speaks in eloquent terms of the unrnistakeable hum of a quickening and returning prosperity which he hears in New Zealand. But, whilst admitting that an industrial revival is taking place in this Colony, he is careful to ascribe this solely to the vast trade New Zealand is doing with the great world's markets. As the representative of the great Freotrade organ of Victoria he cannot or will not see that the South Seas Exhibition is a proof of the great advances this and the sister colonies have made in manufactures, and how the policy of Protection, which lias done such wonders in Victoria, haß already begun to make its effects felt in New Zealand, where it has been adopted so lately, and in but a very modified form. It does not suit " Telemaehus" to give the credit of the hum of industry to Protection, so he attributes that hum to anything else. It is the hum that sounded when "boiling down" saved the squatters of Australia from utter collapse in the forties, when the lands of Victoria were opened up in the sixties, and when irrigation is now promising marvellous results in the burnt-up regionß oE Australia. How careful " Telemaehus " is to avoid all mention of the hum when the goldfields attracted thousands daily to Hobson's Bay in the fifties, and when the adoption of Protection gave an astounding stimulus to manufactures in Victoria in the sixties ! The land and the squatters are everything ; mechanical skill, bone and sinew are nofcbiu^.
