This Day. (Before E. Westenra and G. Boberts, Esqa.) Driving Over CnossiNG.— Charles Hoad* ley was charged with driving n, cab afc other than a walking pace across the intersection o£ Hereford, Colombo and High streets, on Oct. 29. Mr Leathern appeared ' for the accused. J. Palmer, jun,, deposed that Hoadley wbb driving over the croßßing at a alow trot. His cab knocked down Canon Cotterill, who was etanding on the ' crossing. Sergeant Brigga stated that the crossing waa one of those specified in the City By-law No. 10 aB one of those which must be driven over at a walking pace, and : a notice to that effect was posted up there. Mr Leathern asked for an adjournment to enable him to call evidence as to pace, ■ and also for argument. He pointed out that cases of a similar nature had been heard before Mr Whitefoord, before whom the question of the validity of the by-law had been raised, and had not yet been settled. Mr Westenra paid that it was desirable the argument should bo heard before Mr Beetham. The case was adjourned to Dec. 4. Miscellaneous.— -Margaret Nixon was charged with unlawfully employing a young person, one James M'Kinley, under the age of eighteen, during prohibited hoars on Oct. 26. The case was dismissed, as it appeared that the lad had, three months before the date in question, told his employer that he would bo eighteen in two months. — H. Atkinson, for employing . one H. Q. Parsons, a lad under eighteen, : during prohibited houra on Oct. 20, waa fined 30a, — P. W. Delamain, who admitted having plied a Borough Btage carriage off its proper route on Nov. 8 and 9, without having obtained a permit from the Town Cleric, was lined 10a.— F. Mason, John Eusbcll, and J. Lamb were fined 5s on account of similar charges. — J. Williams was fined 203 for plying for hire with an unlicensed vehicle. — J. S. Berry, for a similar offence, anialfio for acting aa a driver without being licensed, waa fined .25a. — George Cook, for driving for hire without being licensed, waa fined ss. Prohibition Order. — An order prohibiting the hotelkeepersof Chriatchurch and the surrounding districts from supplying liquor to John William Davis was issued on theapplication of his wife, Mary Ellen Davis. Drunkenness. — William Sutton, who had been fonndhelplesslydrunkatPapanui, was remanded, for seven days for medioal treatment.
