ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY OF AUSTRALASIA.

<_. The fifteenth annual report of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia has just been published, and from it we extract some information which cannot fail to interest many of our readers. In the first place it should be stated that the Society is supported by voluntary contributions, and the funda are devoted to bestowing rewards upon all who promptly risk their own lives to save those of their fellow creatures, to provide assistance to the apparently drowned or dead, and to distinguish by reward all who, through skill and perseverance, are . successful, and to collect and circulate information regarding the most approved methods and the best apparatus to be used for such purposes. The Society was founded in September, 187-i, just one huudred years after the formation of the Royal Humane Society of England, and siace that date has dealt with 863 cases and made 726 awards for saving or attempting to save life. During the year ending- June 30 last the total number of awards for the whole of the Colonies was 88, of which 11 belonged to New Zealand. Of these 11, 6 certificates of merit and 6 bronze medals were issued to deserving cases. Upon reference to tbe list of contributions received from New Zealand, it appears that the sum of .1.22 was sent last year, and of this .621 was sent from Napier alone, the remainder being sentfrom Auckland. Surely the other parts ofthe Colony could manage to subscribe something to a Society the benefits of wind--** are so obvious. We have no such Society in New Zealand, but enjoy the full benefits of the Society under notice. The report contains full particulars of all the cases where awards were made, and all tho New Zealand cases. One concerns Lyttelton, where, on Nov. 8 of last year, two seamen named Henry Mitchell and Lawson Robinß, belonging to the barque Cormorant, jumped overboard and rescued Graham, another seaman, from drowning, but not before they were greatly exhausted. For their brave conduct they were each awarded a certificate of merit from the Society.
