SEWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.

.©. _ Ordinary Meeting. THIS DAY. An ordinary meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held to-day ; present — Messrs F. Jones., T. H. Anson, W. Boag, J. G. Murray, and W. Dunlop. chairman's statement. In' the absence of the Chairman Mr Jones was voted to the chair, and read the following statement : — " The following is a list of the correspondence received since the last meeting of the Council :— Letters from the Chairman and Mr Eennie, asking for leave of absence. From Avon Eoad Board, asking for a grant for rebuilding the Lower Styx | bridge. From the Malvern Eoad Board, asking for a grant for rebuilding the footbridge over the Kowai. From Halswell Road Board and Mr Sinclair, relative to the clearing for the river Halswell. From the Minister of Public Works, enclosing draft of Public Works Bill, proposed to be introduced next session. From the Minister for Lands, enclosing copy of Orderin - Council, delegating powers to the Christchurch. Domain Board. The monthly report of the Inspector of Slaughterhouses has been received. Reports of Messr3 Davies and Wilson on water-races under their charge have been received, also the following letters : — From Mr E. E. Deacon, relative to damage alleged to be done to the property of Mr Hodgson, and report thereon by Mr Davieß. From Mr Hallenatein, consenting to the construction of a water-race through his land. From Mr Levitb, relative to a water- race running through. Ms land, and Mr Wilson's report thereon. From the County solicitor, reporting the result of the action brought against the Council by Mr Henley. From Messrs Eennie and Wilson, in reference to extending the boundaries of the Ellesmere Waterrace District at Dobbin's Corner. From the Malvern Eoad Board, relative to a gravel pit on part of reserve for water-race purposes at Springfield. From Mr Davison, complaining of insufficient supply of water. From Mr Manhire, relative to his lease of part of plantation reserve at New Brighton. From Messrs Lill and Furze, claiming half cost of fence alongside Eeserve 1763. Tenders for the supply of dog-collars have been received. It will be necessary to confirm resolutions passed at a special meeting on Sept. 25, making special orders re by-laws for traction engines, and maintenance of boundary road between the Bakaia and Ellesmere Eoad Districts. The annual meeting of the Council for the election of a Chairman, and also four members of the Hospital Board, will be held on the fourth Wednesday in November, at noon." Apologies for absence were also received from Messrs Peryman and Westenra. MISCELLANEOUS. Consideration of the letter from the Avon Eoad Board, asking . for a grant for rebuilding the Lower Styx bridge waa deferred to next meeting. The application of the Malvern Eoad Board for 8. grant in aid of rebuilding the Kowai footbridge, was deferred, pending the attendance of the member for the district. The draft of the proposed Public' Works Bill was referred to the .Roads-Diversion. Committee to report. The Inspector of Slaughterhousea-re-*' ported that they were in good condition. He had cautioned certain butchers against the practice of buying calves in very poor* condition at low rates, killing them, blowing them out, and selling them for veaL The report was received. CLEARING THE HALSWELL. Mr Leatham interviewed the Council, asking for a small increase in the progress payments on his contract for clearing a portion of the river Halswell. The Inspector, Mr Sinclair, reported on the work, and the Council decided to grant an increase in the progress payments should the Inspector approve. [Left sitting.]
