♦ Feobt. — Afber the smart showers of yesterday, Christchurch experienced a decided froat early this morning. The Fire at Hobday's. — A report of the official enquiry into the cause of the fire at Hobday's building will be found on the fourth page. Palace Skating Rink.— The final heats of the great bicycle tournament will take place to-morrow evening, when Mr W. Thompson will again exhibit his wonderful feats on the bicycle. Cup Matches.— At the special meeting of the General Committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association, it was decided, by ten votes to nine, that all Cup Matches shall be continued to-morrow. Public Meeting. — Elsewhere in this issue will bo found an advertisement from the Mayor of Lyttelton calling a public meeting at the Colonists' Hall, for the purpose of considering the Government's action re Chief Gaoler O'Brien. Electricity. — Mr Dando, electrician to the Lyttelton Harbour Board, has just finished the work of erecting the lamps and wires at the Sailors' Home, where it has been decided to use electricity in place of gas for lighting purposes. There are twenty-eiglit incandescent lamps, distributed , over the dining, smoking and reading-rooms, and other departments of the buildings. Over a mile of wire has been used in the work, and it is finished in a workmanlike manner. Kaiapoi Wesleyan Sunday School.— A meeting of the recently formed Mutual Improvement Association was held in the Kaiapoi Wesleyan Sunday School on Thursday evening last. There waß a good attendance. The President, the Rev P. W. Fairclough, in the chair. The Bubject for the evening was a paper on Earl Beaconsfield by Mr H. B. Butcher. The essayist gave an interesting sketch of the late earl, dealing principally with the earlier portion of his life. An animated discuEsion followed, at the close of which Mr Butcher replied to the strictures which had been made by some of the speakers. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the essayist for his admirable paper. Sydenham. — A meeting of the School Committee was held on Oct. 23 ; presentMessrs F. C. Hall (Chairman), J. Denhatn, W. Archhold, B. Muffett, O. Peacock, and J. Forrester. The Inspector's report on the -Annual examination was received, and considered very satisfactory, 56 per cent of the scholars having passed. Resolved— " That the head-master and staff be congratulated on the result of their year's labour." Messr3 Denham and Muffett were appointed a Sub-Committee to get the necessary repairs done to the gates of school grounds, and to procure tan and shingle for the grounds. Correspondence was received from the Sydenham Borough Council and the Board of Education re the exchange of land to make Templar street through to Queen street. Faeewell Banquet to the Governor. —His Worship the Mayor has received a telegram from His Excellency the Governor, stating that he will have much pleasure in accepting the invitation of the citizens of Cbristchurch to a farewell banquet in. the Provincial Council Chambers, on Saturday, Nov. 10. The names of Messrs P. Cunningham, A. J. White and W. E. Mitchell were omitted from the list of Stewards supplied to the newspapers yesterday. The following gentlemen are the Executive Committee for arranging the details of the banquet : The Mayor, Messrs Cunningham, Acfcland, Pickering, Hulbert, Mitchell, Weston, J. L. Scott, and J. Ollivier. As the Provincial Council Chambers only accommodate 250 persons, the tickets will be limited to that number. Early application is necessary, therefore, to obtain tickets. 1.0.G.T. — A meeting was held last night in the upstairs room of the Oddfellows' Hall, Sydenham, for the purpose of reorganising the Pride of Sydenham Lodge, No. 200, LO.Gr.T. Taking into consideration the inclement weather, and the short time which has elapsed since steps were first taken to reorganise the Lodge, there was a good attendance. Bro J. J. Parker, District Deputy Grand Chief Templar, called the Lodge to order, and appointed officers pro tern. Several members were admitted by clearance card from other districts, and some candidates were initiated. The Lodge was then instituted with the usual ceremonies by Bro Parker, assisted by Bros Young and Allison. The following officers were elected: — W.C.T., Bro J. D. Wilson; W.V.T., Sister Pickett j W. Secretary, Bro A. H. Fellingham ; W. Financial Secretary, Bro Christison; W. Treasurer, Bro Wilson j W. Chaplain, Sister Fnltonj Inner Guard, Bro J. A. Pickett; Outside Guard, Bro Davidson. Bro. J. J. Parker was elected Lodge Deputy pro tern. Bro Parker congratulated the members on the favourable auspices under which the Lodge had been reorganised, and on having secured bo comfortable a . place of meeting. He urged the necessity of vigorously carrying on the work of the Order, and expressed his belief that the Lodge would keep well abreast of Bister Lodges. He thanked Bros Wilson, Pickett, and Pulton for the energy they had displayed in seconding his wishes to open a Lodge in Sydenham. He hoped to start other Lodges during bia term of office. Addresses were also given by other officers present. A vote of thanks to the District Deputy and the officers who had assisted him concluded the business.
