DEFAULTING CLERK AND J.P.
EARTHQUAKE. NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 26. <r. G. Victor Bate, an ex-Mayor of Hawers, late J.P. and Clerk of the Hawera County Council, who was last night found guilty of embezzlement, was sentenced this morning to one year and eight months' imprisonment with hard labour. An earthquake shock, lasting about twenty seconds, was felt at a quarter to one o'clock this morning. FALSE PRETENCES. BLBNHEIM, Oct. 26. Simon Miller, charged at the Resident Magistrate's Court with obtaining goods on false pretences from Mr Fisk, at Picton ; also with "sticking up" atMahakipawaand the robbery .of £A 13s, was remanded to Picton at noon to-day. SUDDEN DEATH. DUNEDIN, Oct. 26. Elizabeth Menzieß, boarding-house keeper, died suddenly last night from heart disease, while bathing her niece.
