SAN FRANCISCO SERVICE.
AUCKLAND, August 8. A special meeting of tho Chamber of Commerce was held to-day, when the following resolutions wero passed — " That this Chamber, having considered the various mail routes from Hew Zoaland to London, ia convinced that the one vi.l San Francisco is financially the moat economical, _.nd pcrforniod ia tho sl.ortesfc time ;** " That tbis service is most useful to tbe Colony a3 a whole, and it should not be discontinued except for ono which would (.till further shorten the time of transit." FATAL ACCIDENT. A fatal accident osemred afc "Wan^am on Tuesday morning, when Mrs C. Courtney, whilst drawing water, fell iiito the well and was drowned. COTTAGE BURNED. A five-roomed cottage in Stratford street, Parnell, haa boen burned. The bouse is insured for _S__oo in the Kew /iealand oflice, and the furniture for J&75 by the North British Company. Mr A. Martin, well-known in this city, died somewhat suddenly last night at his residence, Ellerslie.
