A list of new books selected by theSub-Con-mitteev/as handed in, and the Chairman was empowered to obtain the books from Londoa without delay. The meeting then terminated. The Gas Question. — The Ode' follows' HaU was crowded last night with a thoroughly representative gathering of tho City ratepayers. A motion in favour of the City Council's proposal to procure a loan for carrying out tho construction of the gasworks for the City waa almost unanimously adopted, only six dissentients i recording their votes .against it. It appears i that tha alarm was given at the Hospital box in consequence of a fire existing in I Poison street, Addington, where a cottage | consisting of five rooms and out offices, unoccupied, had been totally destroyed. |As yet" the origin of the fire haa not been ! traced, nor tho amount of insurance, if ! &t*.y, heen ascertained. St John Ambulance Association. — Yesterday afternoon Dr de Benzie gave the first of the course of five lectur-s in the operating room at the Hospital to thirty-four lady members of the St John Ambulance Association's Nursing Class. The lecturer, after a few words of introduction, dealt with the subject of the Sick room— on ita selection, preparation, and cleaning ; the bed and beading that should be used, arid how it should be used ; the furnishing, warming, and ventilation of the room. No. 2of tha course is to be on the subject of " Infection and Disinfection/ and the whole course promises to be very valuable, while the ladies appear bent on profiting by them to the full.

The CANTEBEtiET Catholic Literary Society. — The weekly meeting of this Society was held in their rooms "or. August 7, the President in the chair. Tho Eev Father Halbwachs, several vi-jit*'**.-,-, and thirty members were present* to hear the papers on " Home Eule " read by the successful competitors for prizes offered by Mr B. P. Lonargan. These papers had been previously sent in under noms deplume and judged by the Marist Brothers. After hearing the report of the rev examiners, the papers wero read. All deali ably with the subject, some showing that this theme had been the especial study of the competitors. That by Mr Kennedy (wiuner of the first prizo) calls for special mention, it being marked by sound 3r£""xj_*nb and excellent construction. Messrs J. C. Chase and Mr M'Manaway came in for second and third honours.

Parliamentary. — The Legislative Council yesterday afternoon reported the Mining and Land Act Amendment Bills ■with, amendments. The debate on the second reading of the Pair Rent Bill was then resumed, and proved to be practically a chorus of condemnation. After dinnor, there waa further debate on the measure, which was thrown out by twenty-two votes to five. The members of the House of Representatives, who were not sufficiently recuperated for an afternoon sitting (they sat till 5.40 a.m.) did not meet until 7.30. The Premier said tbe Pnblic Works Statement -would be brought down whon the San Francisco Mail question and the Native Bills bad been disposed of. These last were made the first order of the day for 2.80 this afternoon, somo Maori chiefs desiring to appear at lie bar of the House. A number of BUIb passed their second readings without debate. The River Boards Act Amendment and Tobacco Act Amendment Bills were passed, with others.
