« The Rainfall. — According to Mr Stansell's record, '22 inch of rain fell during tho twenty-four hours ending 0 a.m. yesterday, and *86 during the twenty-four hours ending at the same time to-day, mating a total of 1-08 inch. The wind was from the S.W. each day. Overdue. — The steamers Mahinapua and Wanaka, which left Wellington yesterday forenoon for Lyttelton, had not appeared when our despatch left Port at 12.40 p.m. The former waa then twenty-eeven and the latter twenty-six hours out. A dense fog is hanging over the eea, which will doubtless make the task of finding the entrance to the harbour difficult. Religious. — It is purposed to hold a United Christian Conference at Sfc Paul's Church next -week. The syllabus consists of private conferences o£ ministers of various churches for the discussion of various matters in relation to ministerial work, and a series of public meetings, whereat addresses on religious subjects will be delivered. Sudden Death. — An infant child, seven days old, of Joseph Baldwin, Windmill road, Sydenham, died suddenly last night at 10.30. Yesterday morning the child began crying, and was in great pain. Something was administered to relieve the pains. The child was put to bed at a quarter to ten, and went off into a deep sleep, and at halfpast ten the mother noticed that ib was not breathing, and on carefully examining it found that life waa extinct. Patents Applied Fob. — Among the patents for which application has lately been made are those of John Clark Andrews, of Waikuku, near Rangiora, and William Wood, Christchurch, for removing gum from Phormium tenax, and to make the flax fibre more easy to clean j Clement Kind, of Christchurch, and H. S.Austin, for making the spout, bottom, and body of teapots or similar vessels in one piece, instead of using separate pieces and soldering them ; Leonard Pozzi, of Christchurch, for an improvement on Plimpton's roller skates. Working Men's Club. — The usual monthly social of the Sydenham. and Addington W.M.C. was held last Wednesday evening, when the social room was crowded to excess, showing that the efforts of the Committee to supply amusement for the members and their friends are appreciated as they deserve to be. The really excellent programme of songs, recitations, and musical selections, provided for the entertainment of the audience, was loudly applauded. The institution is trying its utmost to supply a long-felt want in Sydenham, viz., musical recreation during the winter evenings, and it is to be hoped that the efforts of the Management Committee will be duly appreciated by the public.
