THE OPPOSITION.

— - ••< -» CONSOLIDATION OF THE PAETY. [ntOM OUB BPBOIAL CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, August 3. A caucus of the old Opposition party was held at two o'clock this afternoon. It was well attended, and a spirit of cordiality prevailed. The opinion generally expressed was tliat the Budget having beea. now diaposed of, it was high time that the party should be organised, and that the go-as-you-please tactics of the last two montha should definitely be abandoned. Mr Walker explained that he had moved his resolution purposely without consulting his friends, and gave his reasons. Several of those who had walked ont pointed out that their eleotion pledges had given them no ohoiee in the matter. They were perfectly willing to vote for a direct vote of No-confidence should the party ever deoide npon moving one. A resolution was then put and carried, that those present constitute themselves into a party, prepared to stand or fall together, and discharge the legitimate duties and funotions of an Opposition It was also decided to elect a Committee of Management. The meeting then adjourned until Tuesday, wheii fnrther steps will be taken in the way of organisation. I may add that very great disgust is expressed at the conduct of several members, who, while refusing to follow Mr Fish's example and openly go over to the Government, have been steadily supporting the Premier, and constantly taking opportunity to attack those whom thej 1 oall their friends in the House. The feeling among the Opposition is very stroug that the time has come to stop this, and insist on these gentlemen taking either one sideorthe other.
