THE ALLEGED LARCENY CASE.

— * — The Accused Committed. The adjourned case against John Fowler for larceny of a watch waa heard this morning at the R.M. Court, the accused calling the following evidence : — C. Klingenstein, in reply to accused, said that he was present when accused was arrested and examined. Had seen accused wearing a watch and chain before this. It was about 10.15 p.m. when accused was arrested. Witness had previously told accused that there had been something wrong with the drawer, and that he would not be allowed to remain there that night. Accused denied that he had done anything. Shortly after that accused went out with Charles Vesey. To Mr Pender : The cut on accused's finger was a fresh one. Witness noticed it at the time he was searched, but had not noticed it before. Jane Mitchell, examined by accused, said that while accused was staying at Klingenstein's she had heard him complain of chilblains on his feet, and lie usually went about the house in the early part of the morning in slippers, and usually went to his bedroom to lie down for an hour or two in the afternoon to rest. The accused tlien addressed the Court at considerable length, raising several points on the evidence. The Bench said that a prim& facie case had been made out, and the accused would be committed for trial. Accused applied for bail, and Mr Pender pointed out that the accused had been a frequent offender, and recommended it being substantial. Bail was fixed, accused at £100, and two sureties at £50 each.
