YACHT RACE.
A yacht race, under the auspices of the Canterbury Yacht Club, was' arranged to take place in Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon. The entries received were : — Fleetwing (R. J. Scott), Little Wonder (J. Sinclair), Coquette (P. Nalder). The two firstnamed were placed at scratch, and the Coquette was allowed 30min. The wind was very light and variable, and the three boats crossed the line as follows : — Hrs Mm Sec Fleetwing ... 3 0 40 ' Little Wonder ... 3 0 £0 Coquette 3 1 50 The Fleetwing set her large square-headed gaff-topsail and balloon jib. As they headed towards the reef, the Fleetwing began to haul away from the others, and rounded at 3h 15m lOsec, the Little Wonder going around at 3h 17m 40aec, while the Coquette lost the pull that was taking her along, and got becalmed before rounding. After rounding the rocks, the wiud appeared to be coming from all points, and the boat 3 managed to head for Parson's Eock buoy, close-hauled. The Little Wonder, at the rear, caught a pull from the westward, which carried her past her old rival, and round the buoy first. Seeing there was no chance of the wind freshening, the boats made for anchorage, after drifting back to the reef. The race was declared "off," and will be sailed next Saturday.
