The Akaroa Regatta.

The ever-popular meeting at Akaroa came off yesterday, and if fine weather, smooth sea, and exciting events can make a good meeting, that at Akaroa on Anniversary Day 1886 may be said to have set a record for comparison with those of future years. The s.g. Botorua, commanded by Captain R. Neville, was laid on to Akaroa by the Union Steamship Company, and proved equal to taking upwards of 400 excursionists a most enjoyable sea trip. She left the steamers' wharf at 8.15 am., and after a passage of unusually calm weather, reached the wharf at Akaroa at exactly noon, just in time, in fact, to see the first race pulled. The trip was not marred by any casualty, and the captain, officers, purser, and stewards all did their best to render it a successful one to the Company and an enjoyable one to those who made the journey. Several of the crews engaged in the pulling races went down to Akaroa in the s s. Akaroa, leaving Lyttelton at 3.15 p.m. the previous day. These reaped the benefit of a night's rest at Akaroa before pulling their races. Sailing Race (for decked or half-decked boats). First prize, £12 and Cup ; second prize, .£3.
