Accidents, Inquests, &c.
Between one and two o'clock yesterday afternoon a boy named Bergh, about twelve years of age, son of Mr Bergh, manager for Messr3 Nashelski and Co., was knocked down in High street,, by tho horse in Dr Patrick's gig. A tramcar was coming along the street at the time, as was also a cart loaded with hay, and the doctor's gig had to pass between the two. The boy, who was crossing the street, seems to have become confused, and ran directly in front of the gig. Dr Patrick, though lie was unable to pull up the horse in time to prevent his being knocked down, contrived to prevent the vehicle passing over him, and ho received no injuries save some rather bad bruises. Tho doctor, having attended to him, took him home, and he is now doing very well. On Sunday last Jesse Payne (17) third I son of Mr James Payne, Lincoln Swamp, was bathing with two companions in the Kaituna creek. It appears the latter were coming out of the water when Jesse went in. He remarked to them as he met them, "If I get drowned, offer up a prayer for me." Almost immediately he got into deep water he called out, " Oh, Ted !" to one o£ his mates, and sank at once. It is supposed he was seized with cramp, as he was able to swim, and could have saved himself otherwise. The party had only been up at the Kaituna a few days working at a threshing machine belonging to Mr Blake, of Lincoln. The sad newß reached his parents on Sunday evening, when his father proceeded to Kaituna. By this time they had recovered the body, and the father brought it home to Lincoln, where an inquest was held on Monday evening, and the remains were interred in the Prebbleton churchyard on Tuesday afternoon. ! A large number of people attended the [ funeral. The burial service was conducted by tho Rev R. Teakle, of Lincoln.
