SYDENHAM.

The bydonham Uorough Council Cham- 1 her wu today the battlefield on which a «

most determined trial of strength was made between the parties of Total Abstinence and Moderation. The approaches to the polling place for the election of a Licensing Committee, were crowded — the footpaths with partisans of the candidates, or rather groups of candidates, and the roadway with vehicles. Each party had provided five candidates so as to minimise the danger from splitting votes, and the more earnest and interested were, in private carriage, express, or cab, scouring the City and model Borough, in search of voters favourable to whichever cause they had espoused. The event was evidently looked upon as a test case, and a very close result waß anticipated. During the forenoon and afternoon a very steady stream of voters poured into the polling place, and at the dinner hour large numbers were brought in from the more distant localities.
