Auckland Opinion on Sir George Grey.
[Special to the " Stab."] AUCKLAND, Sept. 2. Last night's Star says : — " It is a sad thing to have to sound the death-knell of a great reputation, and to that pass we hope we must not come. In summing up the causes and effects of the political embroglio at Wellington, we have no desire to form a premature judgment upon men whose motives have been so studiously concealed that they can only be guessedat or inferred from antecedents and surrounding circumstances. Still, ' whafs done we partly may compute/ and no harm can be inflicted by taking a dispassionate review of recent events in the political arena." After recounting the action of the Grey party daring the last three months, the article j concludes .- — " We search and surmise in j ▼aiii to find a guiding principle in action 1 so apparently inconsistent and inconsiderate, not to say reckless. There may Tbe a hidden key to the mystery, but present Appearances are that a great political genius, sever remarkable for constructive power, has developed a habit of mischievous destruction, which is exerted in pure wantonness and without regard to consequences. Personally, Sir George Grey is above suspicion that his conduct has been influenced by any petty desire for place or its perquisites ; and we shall to the very last resist any imputation that lie has deliberately chosen a course inimical to {he interests of Auckland and the Colony for the sole purpose of furthering personal aims. The probability is that he has been misled by the evil counsels of one or more members of his party, and that he, though "the leader, is not responsible for the recent vagaries. There may have been great interest secured by the successive overthrow of Ministries, but even here, where j 'Grey' is still a name to conjure with, j faith has well-nigh reached its utmost limit."
