Fatal Fires.
[Pee Press Association.] AUOKLAND, August 26. A Maori girl, seven years old, was burnt to death at Mangawai in a v/hare. The Maoris buried the remains. The police will disinter them, and get the Coroner to hold an inquiry into the affair. NELSON, August 27. A five-roomed cottage near Hardy street was discovered to be on fire at five this evening, but was soon extinguished. It was then found that the occupant (Mrs Scaife, sen.), an old and well-known resident, especially in musical circles, had been burnt to death. Mrs Scaife lived by herself, and had hot been seen later than 3 o'clock, when a visitor left. As the remaina were found between the fire-place and the door of the sitting-room, it is surmised that her dress became ignited by coming in contact with the grate, and that she endeavoured to escape but fell. The fire then spread to the building.
