THE PRESS COMPANY, LIMITED.
m ■ [Ihe following delightfully instructive letter and commentary thereon appeared in the Lyttelton Times of this morning. The affair provides a new ohapter for "Commercial Morality in Ohristohureh."] Sib, — In your special correspondence from Wellington in your issue of to-day I observe the following : — " On tho Supplementary Estimates passed last night was a vote of £460 for a four- feeder Wharfdale printing machine, for the Government Printing Offioe, whioh wbb to be purchased from the Press Company." Please allow me epaoe to state that your correspondent has been misinformed. The Press Company have not now, and never have had, suoh a maohine for sale. Furthermore, the Press Company have not at any time been interested in the sale or purohase of such a maohine. — I am, <fco., OHABLES E. BBIGG3, Managing Direotor, Press Company, Limited. Sept. 6. . [Che Telegraph Company (now in liquidation, or lately so) had a machine for sale. Mr Briggs, our Wellington correspondent informs us in answer to a query referring to tho above denial of Mr Briggs, was in Wellington lately, endeavouring to sell that machine to Messrs Blundell Bros., ef the Evening Post. When the machine was bought by tho Government, Mr Briggs' late oonneotion with it naturally led to the conclusion formed by our correspondent that it had become tho property of the Press Company, especially as the Press Company purchased the Ttlegraph newspaper and some of its property. From Mr Briggs' letter we conclude that the machine . was not amongst the property bought by i the Press Company. As some of the shareholders of the late Telegraph Oonro«ay have become Direotors and large shareholders of the Press Company, the maohine turns out to have been, when being pur- | chased by Government, the property, not of the Press Company, but of some of its j more considerable shareholders.— -Ed. L. T. J .
