A Curious Statement.
[BY iBLBCtBAPH.] [tbok oto own ooebespohdbnt.J AUOKLAND. Mat 25. The following statement of James Allon, an unfortunate man apparently in his dotage, will (lays the Suva Times), serve to oxhibit Fiji in a new character, that of a refuge for the destitute of New Zealand:— "l am 69 years old. I was shipped by aMr Freeman, an auctioneer in Oamaru, to come down and boil sugar and make rum. The Company collected the money by subscriptions, and paid £14 for my passage, and gave me £3 to land with. My sister and family live at Hook Valley, Canterbury, New Zealand. I ÜBod to rent a small piece of land about an Acre and a quarter, and used to feed pigs and get my living the best way I could. My friends paid the rent (£8 per year), but the last year they refused to, so I lost the land. I I have been wandorieg in the busb, and have lost all I had. I came down in the Eotorua ; tbjy must take me back."
