A Local Invention.
*». . ... Mesers Cunnington and, Kent, the wellknown scientific instrument'makors, have just completed a now vortical drilling maohine, intended for all kinds of light motal work. This machino, whioh was designed by the makers, contains a number of improromonte in its construction, whioh lend both to simplify its working, and also to render it muoh more effective than drills of tho usual type. It is not of largo size, being iv tended to be fastened on an ordinary table, or working bench. The first peculiarity noticoable about the machine is that, instead of being worked by the hand of tbe oporntor, it is driven by a trsadle giving motion to the drill by means of a thin belt. Tlio two whoels over which this bell pacsos are fixed on the end of a lover at tho buck of the frame, and which, by adjusting a screw, can be moved so as to alter the tension of tbe bell as required. One of the most important improvements in the machine is tho appliance for regulating the " feed." Tho point of tho drill is brought down upon the articlo to bo pierced by a lever in the top of tho frame. This is worked by the hand of the oporntor, aud is bo entirely under his control that tho point ol the drill con be raised or lowered instantaneously. Tho die in which tho drill is fixed is furnished wifli w\ ; at, is known as a t«por chuck, in order ti> rcc.-ivo ir.",!ru!neiil,« of all tun various sizes req'iirtd for different dneriptionß of work.
